5 Ways To Reconnect and Re-energize as a Mom In a Pandemic

The joys of being a mother! How about the joys of being a mother during a pandemic that has you quarantined for days on end…the joys of motherhood right?!?!? Let me be a bit transparent…I am struggling with this new vision of what being a “mommy” looks like.

First of…who would have thought that I would be adding teacher to my resume.


Teacher…man lets add that on top of all the other roles I still have to maintain. I’ve been having a hard time adjusting, but after a month of doing this I think I’m slowly getting the hang of it. It’s difficult, but I have to consider that this is my new normal. Honestly, it’s really hard to put into words because I’m still trying to fully process the changes that are taking place in my life.

Secondly, there is little to no time by myself. To have peace and quiet means to get up earlier than usual or to go to bed later. In order to keep my sanity as an individual I had to make major changes for my self-care. I’m hoping that maybe if you are struggling like I was these can help take the edge off.

Make Intentional Transitions

This may sound weird, but hear me out. I’m still working so it’s a little easier, but when I’m off I have to build it into my schedule. A normal transition is going from one task/role to another. For example, driving home from work or walking from the building to your car. When you're at home all day try to find a way to transition. Take a deep breath, go for a short walk, or even take your car around the block…whatever it takes to reset your brain.

Release the Day

I’m not sure what that looks like for you, but for me I release my day in the shower. I stand in the running water and visualize the day running off of me and going down the drain. This allows me to show up fresh for my family in the evening. Don’t make it complicated…how can you release the day?

Develop Hobbies

I’ve been into my plants, walking outside barefoot, reading, and decorating my home. These things bring me peace, help me focus, remind me that I don’t have to be so serious. Find something new to try or pick up that thing you swore you didn’t have time to get to.

Stay Connected

Just because we are stuck in the house doesn’t mean you have to isolate fully. I’ve been to virtual dance parties, brunches, and support groups. Don’t allow yourself to take on the mindset that you are alone…you’re not alone.

Sleep and Nap…Whenever You Get A Chance

When will you get the chance to schedule regular naps into your daily routine??? I have now given myself permission to sleep and not feel bad. I allow myself to have weekends full of nothing…going from the loveseat, to the couch, to the bed…in that order LOL.

Even though I have not fully processed this life of mine…I still try to make myself a priority. To be the best mom I can be at this time means being kind to myself. In order to juggle all the roles I must remember to pour into myself…you know what they say about an empty cup!!!
